When it comes to Shaun Edwards and rugby, emotion usually drives everything.
Whether it is cajoling his troops to fly off the line and smash the opposition in defence, or the seemingly endless will-he-won’t-he links with coaching England, the heart is never far from Edwards’ sleeve.
But this Saturday in Cardiff is strictly business – he says. It comes as no surprise that Edwards does not do teary-eyed returns.
Back in the place he could call a home-from-home for 12 years this weekend with an unbeaten French team he is only thinking about winning.
‘We need to be significantly better to beat Wales,’ he tells Sportsmail, still fuming from the two late tries Italy ran in against his new side last time out.
‘The last try I was disappointed about. Sometimes it’s nice not to be perfect before a big game – you don’t want to be feeling too comfy about yourself before a big game.’
You sense his teams are never comfortable.
‘We’re playing against the champions and we have to come up with a champion performance,’ he continues.
‘We’re up against a team who have lost two proper Test matches in the last two years – the World Cup semi-final and to a very tough Ireland team over in Dublin in a game that could have gone either way.
